... is a journey in the strange world of Cervantes, which begins from the moment when the brave knight Don Quijote steps out of his house and meets:
one talking dog,
three extravagant witches,
his faithful henchman Sancho Panza,
one star-crossed womanizer,
one gorgeous gypsy-girl,
one literary critic,
one literary fairy,
one thug,
one chief of thieves,
one prostitute,
two twins,
one tender-hearted abuser,
one dying old lady,
and one moment of truth.
Milan Kundera has said: "To take the world as relative, as Cervantes did, to be obliged not to face a single absolute truth but a heap of contradictory truths (truths embodied in imaginary thinking selves called characters), to have as one’s only certainty the wisdom of uncertainty, requires no less courage."
The production was created in cooperation between Tartu New Theatre and The Department of Theatre of EAMT.
The marathon of characters is playful and fun, as the speed at wich the actors deliver their lines at times exceeds the audience's ability to receive them. But in the end it seems like the production is like a long-distance acting sprint, where the winner is not the one, who can present each of their characters without mistakes, but the one, who can put the cube back together. That is the one who can find themselves between the myriad of roles.
Lisanna Lajal/Teater.Muusika.Kino:
With it's faceted storytelling Tartu New Theatre's "Cervantorium" was definitely one of the most interesting dramaturgical concepts this season.
