When we put our headphones on, we can isolate ourselves from other people. Or to meet soulmates who are listening to the same music at the same time on the other side of the world. We all have a favourite song. Unfortunately, it rarely lasts for over 3 minutes. It only began, yet it’s already ending. Something remains, some feeling or recollection but it’s not the same thing. And all these recollections pile up. Everything is not the same. But what is it then and how can we move forward with our lives?
For this production, no new things were built, no new costumes were sewed and no new emotions, previously not experienced in the New Theatre, were brought to the stage. All items, costumes and emotions come from the productions of Ivar and Kristiina Põllu, which were premiered at Tartu New Theatre in the past 14 years. Sort of a retrospective in the beginning of the 15th anniversary season. Only the actors are new – they are using these costumes and props for the first time. And, with their help, we have a chance to free ourselves from all these old things and let go of the memories associated to them.
Katrin Tegova/Eesti Ekspress: Stereo is both an ode to the items reminding us of beautiful moments and memories, and a warning. If we pile up too many things around us, we can suffocate, lose ourselves under the pile of memories, lose touch with the present, lose the ability to think of the future.
Kerli Jõgi/Tartu Postimees: Ivar and Kristiina Põllu’s new play Stereo is the dream come true of every fan of Tartu New Theatre. It’s like a tour of the costume and prop warehouse, where almost every item is a rediscovered memory of a previous production.
Kristiina Põllu/Eesti Päevaleht: Throughout our play, we have a “drowsing person” on stage who goes along his ploughed furrow. Stereo shows that we are not even able to establish a proper contact with one another due to our memories, perceptions, opinions, stances, attitudes. We are hanging onto the old that doesn’t let us freely breath or move. We cling onto it and become attached without noticing how it limits us and constrains our possibilities.
